Give Safe Water Kiosk For Dry Maasai Land Arusha

Summary

The project aims to establish a Safe Water Kiosk in the dry Maasai communities of Monduli District, Arusha Region, Tanzania, serving approximately 2,000 people. The area faces severe water shortages during long dry seasons, forcing women and children to walk several kilometers daily in search of unsafe water sources. The project will provide clean, affordable, and reliable drinking water through a solar-powered kiosk connected to a borehole and water storage tanks.

Challenge

The Maasai communities in dry parts of Arusha, especially Monduli and surrounding villages, experience chronic water scarcity due to drought and climate change. Women and children often spend 7-9 hours daily walking long distances to collect water from unsafe ponds and seasonal dams. During drought seasons, livestock and families compete for the same limited water sources, increasing disease outbreaks and malnutrition. Schools are affected because children miss classes while fetching water .

Solution

The project will install a solar-powered safe water kiosk equipped with a deep borehole, water purification system, elevated storage tanks, and multiple community water collection points. The kiosk will provide safe drinking water daily for approximately 2,000 Maasai residents and their livestock needs. A local water committee will be trained in system operation, financial management, and maintenance to ensure long-term sustainability. Hygiene and sanitation awareness training.

Long-Term Impact

The project will significantly reduce waterborne diseases by improving access to clean and safe water throughout the year. Women and girls will save many hours previously spent searching for water, allowing more time for education, farming, and income-generating activities. Reliable water access will strengthen livestock health and household food security, improving community resilience against drought. School attendance and academic performance among children will improve as water is accessible
