The Horn of Africa is in the midst of its worst hunger crisis in decades, with 22 million people facing starvation.
Right now, women, men, and children in Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya are experiencing extreme hunger because of conflict and climate change. Countless families are unable to access food and water. We simply can’t keep looking away, it’s time to take action.
The worst drought in 40 years has left the land bone dry. Crops are failing, livestock are dying, and water is increasingly hard to find. What’s more, this region is dependent on Ukraine and Russia for nearly a third of its cereal supply, which has been greatly interrupted by the Ukraine Crisis.
Red Cross and Red Crescent staff and volunteers are on the ground right now, working hard to connect communities who are hardest hit with food, health care, cash assistance, water, sanitation and hygiene.
To date, staff and volunteers from Somali Red Crescent, Ethiopian Red Cross and Kenya Red Cross have collectively reached more than 704,000 people affected by the drought across the Horn of Africa, connecting them with health care and providing them with cash assistance, as well as water, sanitation, hygiene, and livelihood assistance.
“A massive scale up is required to offer life-saving assistance to millions of people struggling to find the food they need,” said Australian Red Cross Director of International Programs, Alex Mathieson. “The Movement’s response is also focusing on addressing the underlying causes of the crisis through longer term programs to improve the resilience of the most impoverished communities and displaced populations.”
