Global Hunger Crisis Appeal

In 2022, Australian Red Cross launched the Global Hunger Crisis Appeal to respond to the worldwide hunger crisis which has seen millions of people struggling without the food they need to survive. 

This appeal is now coming to a close, having raised over $526,000 to date.  
 
While our appeal is coming to an end, local Red Cross Red Crescent teams in countries experiencing hunger crisis will continue to provide vital medical aid, nourishment and psychosocial support to people experiencing the impacts of food insecurity. 
 
The Global Hunger Crisis continues to impact millions of people each day. The impact often disproportionally impacts those with experiencing additional vulnerabilities like women, children, the elderly and those living with a disability. The Global Hunger Crisis being fueled by climate-related emergencies, conflict, economic hardship and political obstacles. These factors continue to lead to a growing wave of hunger in countries around the world.  
 
Thanks to those who generously donated to this appeal, Australian Red Cross had the opportunity to support communities in East Africa, including Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, and South Sudan, with emergency support to reach communities hit hardest, with water, food, and healthcare.

Red Cross Red Crescent response 
 

• This Appeal enabled the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to support the Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS), Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS), Somali Red Crescent Society (SRCS) and South Sudan Red Cross (SSRC) to scale up lifesaving humanitarian response and preparedness efforts.  

• Staff and volunteers from these national societies have been working on the ground in the worst affected areas. They are continuing to support communities to: 

• Survive each day: by providing emergency support to people hit hardest, with water, food, immediate financial help, nutrition services, and healthcare. 

• Be prepared for the coming months: with cash support so that people can buy and save what they need in ways which ensure they have the dignity and autonomy to make the best financial decisions for their families. 

• Face the future: by continuing to help people stuck in this cycle of extreme weather to change the way they live as the climate changes – building their resilience with tools, financial help, and vital skills. 

• In north-eastern Kenya, the Kenyan Red Cross has supported more than 520,000 people as part of its drought response so far and is working to support 500,000 more people from the worst affected communities. They are providing food, safe and clean drinking water as well as health support and livestock support, alongside financial assistance.  

• The Ethiopian Red Cross has been supporting people most affected by the food crisis to meet their basic needs by providing financial assistance and food, farm tools, seeds and fertiliser to support people to maintain their livelihoods, alongside psychosocial support and protection services. They are scaling up their response to support an additional 500,000 people in the most affected communities. 

• The Somali Red Crescent has supported around 200,000 families in their drought response through mobile health clinics in the most affected areas, and financial assistance to buy food and essential items. They are also providing clean water and immunisations to prevent the spread of disease amongst the worst affected areas, and are scaling up to reach 560,000 more people. 

•  The South Sudan Red Cross has supported over 200,000 people receive water, sanitation and hygiene assistance. Heavy floodwaters that have followed drought conditions mean food stocks in South Sudan are limited and food prices have increased. South Sudan Red Cross have provided cash voucher assistance to over 70.000 people through multipurpose cash grants and supported 43,000 people to receive livelihood support and training.
