Project Report | Dec 2, 2023
Ending another successful year improving education

Emilly

We are coming to the end of the school year in Brazil and now is a time we can reflect on all that we have achieved with the project as we are saying good bye to a cohort of high school students who have been delivering the project and for 2024 will be venturing into a whole new world - some to continue their studies in universities and colleges and others getting work. The 20 teenagers delivered a whopping 1,788 sessions through the school year on a twice monthly basis to 4,799 elementary school and kindergarden children helping them to develop a love for books and reading, to use their imagination and learn about their indigenous, African and Afro-Brazilian roots from a group of young people from their very own community who they also see on the streets and in the supermarket out of school.

We are also saying goodbye to one of the young adults who leads the programme, training and supervising the teenagers at the same time as interacting with the school administrations to organise all the sessions during the school year. Emilly will be continuing her university studies whilst exploring different working opportunities that will help her achieve her goal of becoming a teacher herself. Here she shares her story which is one that other young people can also follow: "My first contact with ACER was in 2019 as a reading mediator, then I stayed from 2022 to 2023 as one of the leaders for the Stories Transforming the Future project, where I supported and supervised teenagers in municipal schools of the region of Eldorado. Since then I have acquired experiences and responsibilities, guiding the teenagers and representing ACER in these spaces. As previously mentioned during this period, I developed in a very positive way, knowing how to deal with emergency situations finding solutions to problems and having great responsibilities and supporting teenagers in this project is not such a simple job. Through the work I have been doing, I had confirmation of the college course I chose to do due to the fact that I was working and developing children and adolescents."

We continue to be very grateful for all of your support and hope that through the stories we tell, you and visualise some of the immense impact in children's lives that your donations make.
