Transforming the lives of 50 more women farmers

By Shibapriya Dutta | Program Officer

Transforming the lives of poor, women farmers
Transforming the lives of poor, women farmers

Building on transformational journeys

Thank you for your generous & unwavering support which has already helped many women farmers living in abject poverty to lift themselves towards a more sustainable farming livelihood using their climate-smart greenhouse and organic farming practices.

Having successfully helped to transform poor women's farming livelihoods thus far, we continue our efforts with the same compassionate vigour to enable another 50 women in rural Jharkhand, India to also receive the same education, means & methods for a lifetime of sustainable farming and greater prosperity.

When addressing the needs & challenges faced by the women in rural Jharkhand, it’s helpful to understand the challenges & needs these women face. Their farming livelihoods consist of growing crops on less than 2 acres of fragmented plots of land, bearing infertile soil with scarce supply of water and the ever present risks of droughts, floods, pest attacks, and soil erosion, leading to constant distress and perpetual, abject poverty.

Rekha, Lata and others in their villages are transforming their farming livelihoods using climate-smart greenhouses and sustainable farming methods.

That is why, with your valuable support, women such as Rekha and Lata have received the education, training and the use of their own climate-smart greenhouse. The results today are that they have a life-time gift of knowledge, tools and means with which they have transformed their livelihoods, mitigated the climate change related risks and most importantly started growing crops all year around in an environmentally sounder and more sustainable manner.

By also embracing the adoption of more organic farming practices, the careful and prudent use of their greenhouses and by observing the crop specific plans for nurturing and growing healthier crops. They have learnt how to replenish their soils with natural nutrients, overcome the scarcity of water, learnt how to nurture and grow healthier crops, reduced their farming costs and are reaping bigger and better harvests.

Greater climate-resilience through organic farming practices

Like many others before them, both women have also dispensed with the use of any chemical pesticides by learning how to produce and apply natural, organic pesticides both within and outside of their greenhouses. They have also learnt how to sow and grow self-pollinating and indigenous crops within their greenhouse. The removal of the chemical inputs in their farming in turn also safeguards their local ground water supply, used to provide drinking water for them and their neighbours.

With greater confidence and life-long knowledge, these women are also becoming successful local entrepreneurs. They grow the quality seeds and saplings that the other women will grow in their greenhouses. This fosters greater inclusivity and creates a thriving local economy.

Your continued support is their gift for a life-time of prosperity

So take pride in your generous contributions and please continue to donate generously as we continue to transform the farming livelihoods of another 50 women farmers.
