The project enhances sustainability consciousness among young students by distributing 6,000 Moringa and Leucaena seedlings-two per student-to 3,000 students for planting at school and at home, while establishing five Eco-School Clubs in five primary schools in Galkacyo, Somalia. It will also train Eco-Club patrons and school head teachers, promote environmental education, and raise community awareness. The project builds green awareness, improves nutrition, and contributes to climate action.
In Galkacyo town, environmental awareness among communities, especially young people, is extremely limited. Rapid urbanization and climate-related stress, including heatwaves, weaken community-nature connections. Schools rarely offer practical environmental education, leaving students unaware and unmotivated about sustainability. Furthermore, the town has very few trees, worsening heat, soil erosion, and local biodiversity loss, while perpetuating harmful practices and climate vulnerability.
The project forms five Eco-School Clubs in five primary schools, engages 3,000 students in planting 6,000 Moringa and Leucaena trees-two per student at their schools and homes-and trains the Eco-Club patrons established by the project, along with their school head teachers, to guide sustainability activities. Community awareness is further raised through local radio, promoting practical environmental education, greening, and youth-led climate action in Galkacyo.
