New Investments in the Honey Cooperative!

Jeremias selling biodynamic honey

The Bee Boys had a brain-spark! An internationally known biodynamics farming teacher visited the San Pablo Youth Group’s Honey Cooperative and totally inspired them to bring their honey production one step closer to their hearts and wallets – biodynamics.

“Biodynamic beekeeping is different from other beekeeping or bee-stewarding methods in that it aims to minimize environmental stress factors while allowing bees to develop in accordance with their true nature.”

This includes

  • using natural combs,
  • not clipping the queen’s wings,
  • no pollen substitutes (feeding bees their own honey rather than sugar in times of scarcity),
  • using all natural materials for beehives (wood, straw of clay)
  • no pesticides, antibiotics nor artificial insemination
  • honey transported in glass or metal for retail sale

                                                             RudolfSteinerCollege

Not only that, but biodynamics uniquely incorporates astronomical influences with times of harvest merges well with traditional Maya farming practices. Biodynamics also ups the value of their honey in the local market! Finding resources and support that empowers traditional farming practices are mind-blowing for these guys.

Next Investments:  Permaculture Advising for bee fodder plants and New Bee Suits!

As part of their marketing and public relations strategy, the "bee boys" have been taking guests up to their farm and educating them on biodynamic beekeeping.  These visits are becoming very popular and have proven a successful strategy for sales. Visitors, advisors and beekeepers alike need to be suited up well!

Thanks for keeping a youth's environmental microbusiness growing, here's to the spunky kids on Lake Atitlan!
