Mogbencha village stands as a powerful example of how community-led development, when anchored in dignity and local leadership, can transform lives. At the heart of this change are the women of Mogbencha, who are now firmly at the forefront of self-reliance and village management. Their leadership reflects the true, long-term impact of WellFound’s work in the community.
Five years after WellFound began working alongside Mogbencha, the results are both visible and deeply rooted. Access to clean, reliable water has been life-saving. It has reduced water-borne disease, eased the daily burden on women and girls, and freed time for productive activities. Women no longer walk long distances for unsafe water; instead, they are investing that time into strengthening their households and their village economy.
Today, women in Mogbencha are actively saving money through community savings groups, building financial resilience that did not previously exist. These savings are being used to support families during difficult periods, invest in small needs, and plan for the future. Alongside this, women-led vegetable gardens have flourished. These gardens are improving household nutrition, generating small but vital incomes, and reinforcing food security throughout the year.
Crucially, these achievements are not dependent on external management. The women of Mogbencha are running their own systems, organising collectively, and making decisions that benefit the wider community. Their confidence and capacity reflect WellFound’s commitment to community ownership rather than short-term intervention.
Mogbencha demonstrates that when women are empowered with water, skills, and trust, entire villages thrive. This project is not only about infrastructure—it is about lasting change, driven by women, sustained by community, and rooted in dignity.
