Project Report | Mar 11, 2024
National turmoil and deteriorating conditions.

By Dr. Heather P. Hall | Director - International Development

Dear Friends,

The previous dire conditions in Haiti have deteriorated to an unimaginable state. In addition to issues of food security and lack of water, lack of proper healthcare, a renewed cholera outbreak, road blockages, and gang violence, the capital was recently besieged by gangs that resulted in the escape of thousands of prisoners from two major prisons. Gangs have consolidated to attack police stations and airports. At this time flights have been canceled to and from Haiti, the capital is completely under gang control, and more than 300,000 Haitians have been displaced from their homes.

While the country is plunged in deep despair, and no one knows what to expect next, Sonje Ayiti manages to spread joy, love, and hope to our communities. Our clocks never stop despite all the turmoil, and we manage to be present, and in times that we cannot be physically present, we stay connected via the phone with our members. Our CIMA and CLM students continue to receive quality education and use their creative talents. Art and gardening are therapeutic and critical in these times and increased the array of handmade accessories to be sold through the entrepreneurship project and produced blooming school gardens. Farmers are grateful for the good quality seeds that they received, and the harvest is bountiful. Simultaneously, new nurseries are being set up along with 3 acres of pumpkin and yucca plantation.

Unfortunately, one of our CLM Case Managers recently hit a rode barricade and fell off his motorcycle. He sustained a broken clavicle because of the accident and is at a hospital in Plaine du Nord awaiting surgery.

Thank you for all you have done and continue to do to help Haiti.
