Maritza has spent her life growing food and yet she walks almost an hour to get to her bio-intensive gardening class, which she says has taught her a better way to farm. She has been coming to Clinica Verde regularly for instruction on home gardening and nutrition education.
Maritza, 41, humble and warm, is from a rural community – and is one of the most diligent and committed students in the Bio-intensive Gardening program offered by Clínica Verde, with the support of Clif Bar Family Foundation. The projects aims to teach people from the countryside techniques that allow them to grow their own nutrient-rich food and take care of the environment at the same time.
Maritza has managed to apply the techniques she's learned to her traditional crops, and in turn diversified her garden with tomatoes, cabbage, peppers, celery and beets – products that will help her improve the diet of her family.
"I am going to continue with this method and I am not going to forget this project, because I learned to produce my land in a better way and make organic compost," said the villager, who added that now she will be able to share the seeds and vegetables with her neighbors, so that they too can produce rich and healthy gardens for their families.
We are so grateful for your support of this important work.
