Clinica Verde Dissolving

By Susan Dix Lyons | Founder

Dear Beloved Friends,

After careful thought and deliberation, the Board of Directors of Clinica Verde has voted to begin the process to dissolve our organization.

It's now been 8 months since Clinica Verde was forcibly shut down by the Nicaraguan government, joining some 2,000 NGO's closed by the Ortega-Murillo regime. Conditions continue to worsen in the country.

We started Clinica Verde 15 years ago with exceptional partners and a commitment to our mission to bring health and hope to families in need. It has been the central work of my life over those amazingly giving years. My sadness for the way that CV ended is settling into thankfulness for the opportunity to do such meaningful work with remarkable humans for so long. I've always been lucky, and the work of Clinica Verde made me so much luckier. Many of our former employees have been able to secure new work, others have emigrated to Costa Rica or the U.S., and some still reside in that space of hope and uncertainty. We hold each of them close in our hearts and minds.

Our amazing founding Board member, Cristiana Chamorro, continues to be held as a political prisoner denied basic human rights, along with many other Nicaraguans unjustly detained. It has been more than a year and a half since her arrest. No one should tolerate such injustice. Clinica Verde always maintained a strictly apolitical stance, dedicated only to service and compassion to those most in need – rural families living in poverty. In fact, we partnered with the Ortega-Murillo government to extend our model to rural health posts and train government workers in our compassionate care approach. It was an incredibly satisfying partnership that benefited many rural Nicaraguans, and one of the highlights of our tenure working in Nicaragua. This said, I no longer feel the purpose or ability to maintain neutrality. As an individual stepping away from the organization, I want to share and affirm my strong opposition to the cruel treatment of honorable Nicaraguans and the repression that continues to strangle progress and basic human rights in that beautiful country.

As part of our dissolution, our Board will be selecting other non-profits with similar missions or a history of collaboration in our work for the legal transfer of our remaining assets.

We want to thank you – and GlobalGiving – for being a rich part of our community. We joined GlobalGiving in 2009 with a dream of health and hope for families in need. What we were able to accomplish over these past years has been possible only through the generous support and human kindness of people like you. We will be grateful until our very last day on this planet.

With much love – y siempre esperanza.
