Equitable Medicaid and Clinical Research works with over 500 volunteers, 90% of whom are unemployed and unable to afford health insurance. Many are married with children, and their small stipends cannot cover medical expenses. This project will provide basic health insurance for our volunteers to keep them healthy, motivated, and active in serving rural and disadvantaged communities through ongoing humanitarian programs across Nigeria.
Most of our 500 active volunteers face serious challenges accessing healthcare. Without health insurance, even minor illnesses can cause financial hardship and force them to stop volunteering. Many have families who depend on them, yet the cost of medical treatment remains beyond reach. Lack of healthcare support leads to absenteeism, poor morale, and health risks that affect the delivery of our community-based programs.
This project will enroll selected volunteers under a community health insurance plan that covers basic medical care, maternal services, and emergency treatment. By reducing their out-of-pocket health expenses, volunteers can focus on their humanitarian work without worrying about medical bills. Healthier volunteers will be more consistent in outreach, improving the delivery of healthcare, nutrition, and education projects in rural areas.
Providing health insurance will strengthen our volunteer base and improve retention across all programs. Volunteers who stay healthy can continue to reach more people in rural communities, ensuring stability and growth in our humanitarian work. The project will also promote a culture of preventive health care among volunteers and their families, creating a sustainable system that protects those who serve the most vulnerable.
