The San Vicente Fundacion Children's Hospital provides highly complex medical care to children aged 0 to 15 years. With over 60 years of experience, it has become the largest children's hospital in Antioquia and has been a pioneer in creating interdisciplinary groups to address complex pediatric pathologies. The hospital has a vital capacity of 195 hospital beds, which in 2023 allowed for the treatment of 20,957 patients, 16,317 hospital discharges, and the performance of 4030 pediatric surgeries
For the last 15 years in Medellin, there has been a closure of pediatric beds in public and private healthcare centers. This trend is attributed to the low profitability of specialized pediatric services. Consequently, there has been a rise in waiting times for pediatric patients requiring hospitalization, increasing the likelihood of severe complications and mortality among children. This saturation primarily impacts patients of subsidized health insurance schemes and vulnerable communities.
The children's hospital, in its commitment to the comprehensive care of children's lives and its social mission to be a hospital that serves everyone, continues to strengthen its specialized pediatric services to address complex diseases such as childhood cancer, congenital heart diseases, renal diseases, transplants, neonatal care, congenital malformations, emergencies, and burn patients. The objective is to ensure access to quality medical care for the most vulnerable population in the country
This project enables the operation of 195 beds, including: 28 ICU beds, 15 IMCU beds, 15 burn unit hospitalization beds, 18 oncology beds, 14 neonatal ICU beds, and 26 incubators. These facilities provide comprehensive care for the children of Colombia, ensuring access to high-quality and complex healthcare services. This initiative promotes human rights, development, and instills hope, particularly benefiting individuals in rural areas, indigenous communities, and vulnerable populations.
