Unleashing Hope: How Hamida Defied Paralysis at FMIC

By Sultan Ahmed | Manager Resource Development and Communications

Coping with a Challenging Health Issue: Hamida, a 12-year-old from Maidan Wardak, couldn't walk due to a debilitating condition. She felt immense frustration and sadness, unable to attend school or play with friends.

Unaltered Health Condition: Despite diligently seeking medical attention at local clinics and multiple private hospitals in Kabul, hor health condition showed no signs of improvement or change.

A life-changing moment: Fortunately, a family member suggested FMIC as an option, leading Hamida to receive care from two exceptionally skilled doctors, Dr. Mirza Mohammad Najrabi and Dr. Heshmatullah Zia.

Factors Leading to Leg Paralysis: After a comprehensive physical examination and MRI, it was revealed that Hamida's paralysis in both legs resulted from a dorsal spine kyphotic deformity and vertebral collapse caused by Spine Tuberculosis.

Embracing Courago on the Path to Healing: FMIC's medical team conducted successful surgery on Hamida, involving procedures such as Decompression, bone graft, and fixation resulting in substantial
enhancement of her mobility.

Reviving Mobility: Within a mere four weeks, Hamida reclaimed her ability to walk, resume her education, and pursue her dreams and ambitions with renewed determination.

Resource blind access to healthcare: The family received a tremendous relief when they discovered that all treatment expenses would be covered. La Chaîne de l'Espoir is privileged to have contributed to her care,
finding inspiration in her remarkable journey.

Patient Welfare Program at FMIC:

Since its establishment in April 2006 up to June 2023, FMIC has become a beacon of hope for 0.71 million patients who were otherwise burdened by the scarcity of resources and faced the grim prospect of forgoing critical medical treatments. The overall contribution have amounted to over a staggering 49 million USD, which has directly funded the medical expenses and services that these patients desperately needed. At FMIC, we firmly believe that healthcare is a fundamental right that should be accessible to all, regardless of financial constraints. Donor support has allowed us to bridge the gap and make a significant difference in the lives of vulnerable individuals and families across Afghanistan. This program has not only provided financial relief but has also brought hope, dignity, and a chance for a healthier future.

FMIC stands as a symbol of excellence in healthcare, offering services that were previously rare in the country. Patients who once had to consider expensive foreign treatments can now receive comparable and superior care right at home. This not only saves them substantial financial resources but also reduces the burden of traveling abroad, making the treatment process less time and resource-intensive. We cannot overstate the profound gratitude we have for our donors, both individuals and organizations, who have extended their compassionate hand towards this noble cause. Your belief in our mission has empowered us to persist in our endeavors, reaching even more deserving patients and transforming their lives.

As we move forward, we envision a future where no Afghan must compromise on their critical medical treatment due to resource constraints. With your continued support, we can extend the reach of FMIC's Patient Welfare Program, amplify our impact, and create a lasting legacy of positive change in the healthcare landscape of Afghanistan. In conclusion, we humbly request your ongoing support in this journey of healing and hope. Together, let us continue to uplift the lives of indigent patients and ensure that no one is left behind when it comes to healthcare.
