Dear Supporters,
The Humla Health and Education Support Project has provided significant support to the health and education sectors in Namkha, Simikot, Sarkegad, Chankheli, and Tanjakot Rural Municipalities of Humla district. People from marginalized and disadvantaged communities have directly benefited from this project. This report covers activities completed during July - Sept, 2025.
Healthcare - Support operation of health posts and birthing centres
Monitoring of health posts located in Yari, Kermi, Bargaun, Sarkegad, Piplang, Tumcha and Maspur was carried out.
Seven health posts provided basic health services, delivery services, family planning services and vaccine for children under five years of age. A total of 1,990 women and 1,570 men directly benefitted from the treatment services.
Due to the lack of health workers and medicines, the health posts in Yari, Kermi, and Maspur could not operate effectively last year. However, this year, they have come into regular operation, although lack of manpower forms a problem at times.
Training for health staff
A five-day training course called Safe Motherhood and Basic Health Care was provided for health workers, to improve the quality of services to the community. A total of 8 health workers attended the training. This training focused on enhancing their skills in delivering safe and effective maternal and basic health care services. The training consisted of; safe motherhood and maternal services, clinical skills and practical competencies I and II and infection prevention, referral and community engagement.
The Humla Health and Education Support Project will also fund a one-month internship training at the District hospital for two health care workers from Piplang, Barngaun and Yari health posts.
Post-training action plan for safe motherhood and basic health care will include:
Due to increased awareness of health and sanitation at the community level, outbreaks of diseases and the number of infected people has decreased.
Due to the continued support of The Nepal Trust in the health sector in Humla over the years,
maternity services have been started at the birthing centers in Piplang, Kermi, Bargau, Sarkegad, and Tumcha. This has significantly improved the health of mothers and newborns, and there has been no death of mother or child. This is a very significant achievement. However, in Yari and Maspur, maternity services have not yet started from the government has not received approval to operate the birthing center due to the limited number of births per month which needs to be 3 minimum to get BC status.
Education for school students
The child health education program (Little Doctors) was implemented in Manasarovar, Balmandir, Ralling, and Himjyoti Secondary schools of Humla district. Students from classes 7 and 8 participated in the program. Priority was given to students with disabilities and those from poor groups in this program. A total of 86 students benefitted from this education.
This activity has had a positive impact on students’ knowledge, skills, and behavior, helping them become more aware and responsible regarding health-related issues. After the completion of the Child Health Education Program (Little Doctor Program), the participating students prepared an action plan to carry out basic first aid, improve nutrition, identify various diseases, and promote hygiene practices in their respective schools, communities, and homes.
Renovation and carpentry for local schools
The School Maintenance and Furniture Support Program was successfully implemented in five schools of Humla District (Shree Dewal Basic School (Tumcha), Ishwar Basic School (Chhyagi), Himjyoti Secondary School (Sarkegad), Humla Secondary School (Raya), and Kailash Secondary School (Dandafaya). Internet installation and furniture support were carried out in Tumcha; Similarly, stage reconstruction in Sarkegad; drinking water supply system maintenance and furniture support in Chhyangi; toilet and drinking water supply maintenance in Raya; and furniture support in Dandafaya.
The project has significantly enhanced the physical infrastructure of the schools. It has also contributed to creating a safe, clean, and child-friendly learning environment, there by supporting the overall improvement of education quality in these schools.
Shree Dewal Basic School in Tumcha previously had no access to computers or internet. For any administrative work, school staff had to walk for two days to reach either Sarkegad or Simikot. Due to a lack of furniture, both teachers and students were compelled to sit on the floor during lessons. However, with the support of the project, all computer and internet-related tasks are now being carried out within the school itself, and students have started attending computer and internet classes.
Please continue to support the Nepal Trust and help improve the quality of people's lives in the hidden Himalayas.
Namaste,
Anna.
