Dear friends,
It is a pleasure to e-meet you again through this project report.
After studying on campus for six months, the students in the Vocational Scholarship program who are study hospitality are now on their job training. They started the training session in January and will finish it in June 2025. For these six months, they would learn the actual working activities in the hospitality industry.
Out of 14, we bring you two students' stories about their job training activities: Serli and Gekmas. Both study at our campus partner, Monarch Bali Gianyar.
Serli studies culinary arts and now gets her training in a five-star hotel in Tanjung Benoa, Nusa Dua. It takes almost one hour to get from her house to the hotel, so she decided to rent a room near the hotel. It is her first time to be far away from her family.
"I am glad that I get the opportunity to be trained in a five star hotel in Nusa Dua. This hotel is a part of a renowned hotel chain and as you can guess, it has a very high standard of services. I am grateful that during my learning, everyone around me was so supportive. All the seniors are kind to me, and they always direct me when I encounter problems in the kitchen.
During my first two months, I was stationed in the Japanese restaurant of the hotel. I got morning shifts and handled the breakfast for the guests. It is quite challenging as I need to be in the kitchen at 5 AM. In the restaurant, I learned a lot about Japanese cuisine. I didn't get much training on this during my study at campus, and it makes the learning process even more interesting. I also learned a lot about time management in the kitchen. At first, I got overwhelmed when the kitchen became busy, but my senior always taught me to be calm. Now, I can use time effectively.
Starting this month, I transferred to another restaurant. Unlike the previous one that serves Japanese food, the new place is serving exclusively Indonesian food. I will not need to be at the kitchen early in the morning as my job training will focus on serving lunch and dinner. I realize that will be a great difference, but I am eager to learn. I am happy to get the opportunity to learn about different kinds of cuisine. Please wish me luck for my new journey in the new restaurant!"
Gekmas studies Front Office management, and now she is on the job training in a luxury hotel near Ubud.
"I am happy to get my job training in this luxury hotel. After six months learn on campus, I finally got the chance to practice in a real hotel setting. Beyond my expectations, there are so many things to learn. Not only do I need to be able to handle guest check-in and out, but I also learned that the receptionist could help the guests during any unexpected event such as fire or earthquake. Frontliner should be able to direct guest to safe area.
My training is awesome because all seniors are willing to help me and direct me. I also have a chance to interact with the guests. Once, I got a mention on Trip Advisor from one of the guest that I handled. I was so happy learning this and I am eager to learn more."
We are happy that the sponsored students find that their job training is enjoyable and that they could learn a lot from these experiences. Thank you for your support to our students.
Have a great spring!
Terima kasih,
YKIP Team
