Menstrual Support for 100 Displaced Girls

By SULAMANI | COORDINATOR

1. Project Background

In eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, particularly in North Kivu, years of armed conflict have displaced more than 600,000 people. Among the most affected are women and adolescent girls living in camps or host communities under extremely precarious conditions.

These girls face serious challenges in managing their menstrual hygiene due to the lack of sanitary supplies, inadequate facilities, and persistent social taboos. Many are forced to use unsafe alternatives, exposing them to health risks, infections, and loss of dignity. This situation also contributes to school absenteeism and social exclusion.

2. Project Objective

The project “Help 100 Displaced Girls Access Menstrual Care” aims to sustainably improve the living conditions of 100 displaced girls by ensuring:

  • Access to safe and reusable menstrual hygiene kits
  • Education on menstrual health and proper hygiene practices
  • Economic empowerment through vocational training
  • Community awareness and dignity restoration

3. Beneficiaries

  • 100 displaced adolescent girls living in conflict-affected areas of North Kivu
  • Indirect beneficiaries: their families and surrounding communities

4. Key Activities

The project is built around three main pillars:

  • Distribution of reusable menstrual hygiene kits to reduce hygiene insecurity
  • Monthly awareness sessions to break menstrual taboos and promote safe practices
  • Vocational training in the production and sale of menstrual hygiene products
  • Establishment of a local cooperative to support production, income generation, and sustainability

5. Project Progress

Currently:

  • The project is in the planning and preparation phase
  • Identification of trainers and beneficiaries is ongoing
  • The official launch is planned for November 2025
  • Thanks to the partnership with GlobalGiving, USD 151 has already been raised out of a total budget of USD 10,000

6. Budget Overview

The total budget of USD 10,000 will mainly support:

  • Procurement and distribution of menstrual hygiene kits
  • Training and awareness sessions
  • Establishment and support of the cooperative
  • Logistics and monitoring activities

7. Expected Impact

  • Improved menstrual health and hygiene among beneficiary girls
  • Reduced school absenteeism related to menstruation
  • Increased economic independence for young women
  • Reduction of menstrual stigma within communities
  • Creation of a sustainable and scalable community model

8. Acknowledgements

We sincerely thank all donors who have already contributed, as well as our partner GlobalGiving for their continued trust and support in this impactful initiative.

9. Call for Support

We urgently call upon individuals, organizations, and international partners to join this initiative. Your support is essential to reach the USD 10,000 goal and to ensure that these 100 vulnerable girls can live with dignity, safety, and hope.

Every contribution matters. Together, we can turn vulnerability into empowerment and restore dignity where it has been lost.
