Twelve-year-old Pete has lived with his grandmother since he was a baby. When he was just three months old, his mother left for another man, and his father, battling substance abuse, was unable to care for him.
Life has not been easy for Pete and his grandmother. His grandmother works as a day laborer—pasturing water buffalo and tending rice fields. Some days, they share a single meal; other days, they have none. During some seasons, they can forage for mushrooms or frogs just to supplement their diet.
Despite their struggles, Pete's grandmother has continued to raise her grandson in love. A quiet and thoughtful boy, Pete enjoys playing drums and spending time with friends.
Since receiving sponsorship through Education Matters two years ago, their lives have changed dramatically. With school expenses covered, they no longer carry the same financial weight. Pete has grown more confident, talks more openly with his mentor, and has taken on greater responsibility at home—helping cook, gather firewood, and care for their animals.
The sponsorship also covers school lunches, transportation, and uniforms. When Pete got new shoes and clothes last April, the joy on his and his grandmother’s faces said it all! They are deeply thankful—for provision, for hope, and for a better future that now feels within reach.
