Our last official session of Earth Keepers was back in March. We did a variety of activities including sit spots, meet a tree, and everyone's favorite game, Windigo! After defeating the windigos (counselors dressed as wild creatures), we finished with our usual closing circle. Many of the kids were unsure if they would see each other again until fall, or if they would be able to experience nature connections through Earth Keepers. It was an emotional experience, but the circle provided a good place for all of us to share our feelings.
We miss the kids a lot, but we remain committed to connecting them with nature. Over the past few months, Piedmont Wildlife Center has been producing instructional videos on nature activities for all ages. From building tree spirits to socially distanced games, we're sharing as much of our knowledge as we can to keep people hopeful and active. A very special shout out to our interns, Mollie and Emily, who kept our connections strong when a majority of our staff was furloughed in April.
Now, we're back and ready to adapt! Schools in North Carolina don't open until August, but we're hard at work modifying our programs. Whether that includes developing online resources or planning safety protocols for in-person child care, we are devoted to continuing our mission of connecting people and nature. Help us become better and stronger. With online programming, we have the opportunity to reach more kids than ever before. Your support is critical to making this happen!
Many of us are rediscovering the power of being outside. The sound of the wind through the trees and the warmth of the sun on your skin feels invigorating after so much time indoors. Thanks to you, Earth Keepers already know this! You can expect to find them fox walking through the woods and looking for sticks, frogs and everything in between.
We truly appreciate your support. Your contributions make these meaningful opportunities possible. All of us at PWC hope you and your families are healthy and happy.
