Hello All,
Autumn at PWC has brought the return of many favorite fall programs including intersession, homeschool, and afterschool camps.
We reintroduced one of our beloved camp themes during our third week of intersession: Ancient Ways. Campers explored the forests and learned about ancient settlements, foods, and stories. One challenge we gave students at the fire guild was to start a fire using only natural resources and using only one match. Once the campers had gotten well-versed in fire-making skills, we worked together to make food to share such as butter, roasted potatoes, and dough babies. As the days get colder we invite all of you to partake in this fire and food challenge with others and remind yourself of the excitement that comes with sparking these unique accomplishments.
Homeschool in the Wild has returned with 39 new students and 56 returning students for this season. The overarching theme this fall is Adaptations. Throughout the week campers have learned about animal adaptations, such as fox walking and deer ears, and human adaptions, such as structure and tool building. One group of Earth Keepers spent their entire afternoon crafting a house to protect their snail, using natural materials such as sticks, mud, and lichen.
Both the Durham and Orange County afterschool programs are starting in mid-October. The Orange county staff have the opportunity to return to the three middle school groups from their spring programs, as well as start a new afterschool program at Carrboro elementary school.
Our Durham coordinator partnered with the school district to have buses from four elementary schools bring students to Leigh Farm Park, our Durham location. This is a step towards one of our many goals of creating accessible programs for all students.
As always, thank you so much for all of your support. Giving students the opportunity to explore and learn from the outdoors is something we never want to take for granted.
