Ankita's story

By Erika Narkiewicz | Digital Fundraiser

Ankita's life has been changed by the support and care she has received in her hostel-based education:

Ankita is 13 years old and is learning in 7th standard. Her mother died when she was just 12 days old, and her new step mother refused to take care of her and her sister, so their grandmother took care of them. Her grandmother worked as an agricultural labourer, and they lived in a wooden house with no electricity or toilet or running water. The hostel took the two girls in when they learned about their living conditions.

Ankita was very homesick when she arrived at the hostel, and was very afraid of new places. She had never been to school before. She would not bathe or wash her clothes or clean her teeth. She would hide when asked to play, and would cry a lot and ask to go home.

After 3-4 months of patient care she started to change. She would talk to the other girls, and made two friends. She would talk to the Warden and when ask whether she would like to stay or to go home, she said she would like to stay at the hostel.

Ankita is now doing really well: she plays the guitar, she sings, she studies and learns to read the newspaper. She happily celebrated her birthday recently and her grandmother is very happy to see her playfulness and change in her language skills.

Your donations are giving girls like Ankita the chance to lead a different life than the one they are born into- one that they choose for themselves.

With gratitude,

Erika Narkiewicz
