Help 50 Nigerian Schools Combat Child Abuse

By Francis Osisiogu | Project Leader

Since the last report, the Child Protection Initiative has continued to expand its reach and strengthen safeguarding systems across schools in North-Central Nigeria. The focus has remained on empowering students, teachers, and community members with practical knowledge to prevent, identify, and respond to cases of child abuse.

Key Activities Completed

  • School Engagement Expanded: The project maintained active engagement across the 50 target schools, with follow-up visits to reinforce child protection structures already introduced.
  • Training Sessions Delivered: Additional awareness and capacity-building sessions were conducted for teachers and students on recognizing signs of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, as well as proper reporting channels.
  • Monitoring & Support: School focal persons were supported through regular check-ins to ensure that reporting systems are functioning and that identified cases receive appropriate attention.
  • Community Sensitization: Parents and community stakeholders were also engaged in discussions aimed at strengthening collective responsibility for child safety.

Individuals Reached (To Date)

  • Approximately 1,000+ students have been reached through awareness and training sessions
  • Around 120 teachers and school staff have received targeted child protection training
  • Dozens of community stakeholders have participated in sensitization activities

Story from the Field

In one of the participating schools, a teacher noticed a change in behavior in a quiet 11-year-old student who had recently begun withdrawing from classmates and showing signs of distress. Because of the training received through the program, the teacher recognized these as possible indicators of emotional abuse. The issue was reported through the school’s newly established child protection channel. With intervention from school authorities and community support structures, the child was referred for appropriate counseling and protection support. Today, the student is gradually reintegrating into school life with improved emotional stability.
