Help 50 Nigerian Schools Combat Child Abuse

Since the last report, Elite Star Foundation has continued strengthening child protection systems across the 50 participating schools in North-Central Nigeria. The project has focused on follow-up school visits, teacher and student awareness sessions, monitoring of safeguarding mechanisms, and continued engagement with parents and community stakeholders.

To date, more than 1,000 students have benefited from child protection awareness and safety education, while approximately 120 teachers and school staff have received practical training on recognizing, reporting, and responding to suspected abuse. In addition, dozens of parents and community stakeholders have participated in sensitization activities.

One encouraging story involved an 11-year-old student who became unusually withdrawn and appeared emotionally distressed. A trained teacher recognized the warning signs and used the school’s established reporting channel to raise the concern. The child was connected with appropriate protection and counseling support, and has since shown signs of improved emotional wellbeing and reintegration into school life.

These activities are helping schools move from awareness to action, creating safer environments where children can be seen, heard, protected, and supported.
