New Animals Visiting Title 1 Schools

By Noelle Rizzieri | Director of Conservation

Hi Friends!

Happy New Year! As the new year has started and teachers and students have made their way back to their classrooms, Piedmont Wildlife Center has begun gearing up for an extremely busy spring program season. Spring 2023 will look a little bit different from previous years because we have welcomed THREE new raptors (a great-horned owl, a screech owl and a red-shouldered hawk) to PWC in the past couple of months! All three of our new raptors came to us from a rehabilitation facility in Virginia and were deemed nonreleasable due to wing, eye or head injuries. While we are still working on training our new birds, they are making great progress and have already been to a program or two.

You may be asking yourself, "how do three new birds affect Title 1 school programming?". Great question! With the addition of our three new birds and our new opossum, Pickles (adopted in August of 2022), we are now able to be at two schools at the same time! This means that we can reach even more students across the Triangle area and use our Title 1 funds from donors like you to schedule more visits to students who would benefit the most from our programming. Thank YOU for all of your continued support!

We are also excited to share that we received ANOTHER Title 1 grant to visit 10 more schools during the 2022-2023 school year. With our two grants for the school year plus your generous donations, we will be reaching 23 Title 1 classrooms this school year! That's more than double the number of Title 1 classrooms we visited last year. We're so thrilled to be able to grow our reach to these schools and can't wait to see what the future holds. With new animals and continued support from thoughtful donors like you, our future is bright!

Stay Wild,

Noelle Rizzieri
