Youth Skills Development to Fight Unemployment

By Anthony Hulula | Director/Project Leader

I hope this message finds you well. I am pleased to share with you the progress of our project titled "Help A Child Get Back to School" At The Ngao Foundation, we believe that everyone possesses inherent potential, talents, and capacities. With the right environment, individuals can flourish, driving personal growth and community development.

Project Overview

In the past quarter, The Ngao Foundation has supported 12 students in accessing education in electrical installation. The Ngao Foundation Electrical Skill Training Program is a youth-focused initiative designed to equip young people with essential skills, enabling them to become self-reliant and support their families. This program aims to reduce youth apathy, idleness, crime, and drug abuse by providing purposeful engagement.

The Electrical Skill Training Program targets youth from slums and informal settlements in Kangemi and its environs. Many of these youths have dropped out or never attended school due to various challenges, including a lack of schools and family vulnerabilities. The program seeks to teach minds, touch hearts, and transform lives, offering a structured three-year training course with the following grade levels:

  • Grade 3 (Entry Level): One year
  • Grade 2: One year
  • Grade 1: One year

For each level, students must pass examinations supervised by the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA), a government body. Our practical-oriented training has resulted in high success rates, with all past students currently employed or engaged in self-employment.

Challenges and Support

While we have made significant progress, we continue to face challenges in procuring training materials for our students. Your support has been enormous, and we cannot thank you enough. Choosing to support us is a blessing, and it is never taken for granted. There are hundreds of youths in the community in need of this support with similar or more serious cases, but we have not been able to reach them. Through your support and network, we assure you that we will reach more youth.

Your support will go directly to paying fees and procuring training materials for every youth we enroll. Every donation counts in transforming the life of a child, a youth, a family, and overall, a community. We are very happy to have you as a friend, and we invite you to visit us to meet these children and youths benefiting from your generous gifts.

Required Materials

For successful training, we need the following consumable and non-consumable materials for practical classwork:

Consumable Materials:

  • T/E PVC sheathed cables: 1.5mm, 2.5mm, 4.0mm, 6.0mm, and 10.0mm
  • Insulated cables (red, black, yellow): 1.5mm, 2.5mm, 4.0mm, 6.0mm, and 10.0mm
  • PVC conduits (light and heavy gauge): 20mm, 25mm, 32mm

Non-Consumable Accessories:

  • Twin cutout
  • Single cutout
  • 63A MCB
  • 3-phase distribution board
  • Dustcoat

  • Overalls

Your support will enable us to continue transforming the lives of youth in Nairobi's slums and informal settlements. By providing these young individuals with the skills and knowledge needed to become self-reliant, we can reduce crime and drug abuse and foster a brighter future for them and their communities.

Please find attached photos of some of our students in class and in the field. We look forward to your positive response and any support you can offer to facilitate the needed change.

Thank you for your continued support and commitment to empowering the youth
