By Catherine Kirkendall | Executive Director, Hagar USA
The takeover of Afghanistan on August 15 left millions in shock and grief. Right from the outset when the conflict occurred, you, and so many other wonderful supporters, rallied and generously donated to Hagar’s emergency relief activities. These precious funds allowed our staff in Afghanistan to confidently map out the relief and recovery plans for thousands of women and children in Kabul who have been displaced by the current humanitarian crisis.
Hagar has received official documents from the government to proceed with our relief response and while we continue to face challenges, your support has allowed aid distribution to start!
After identifying the most vulnerable families in the Karte 3 District area, Hagar was able to arrange and distribute food parcels recently which helped feed approximately 1120 people. This distribution was carefully planned and implemented by Hagar. Precious food was paid for, delivered to a local stadium and assembled in rows by Hagar staff. The location was selected due to its accessibility to beneficiaries and local Police were also on hand to maintain order and keep everyone safe. Having given out identification cards to those receiving parcels, representatives from each family then came, sat behind their parcel and were able to take it home. To each of these families, this food has come into their homes at a time when they are struggling to afford basic essentials.
Of notable significance was also the presence and support of government staff at this food distribution event. The Director of Refugees and returnees, the representative of the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs and the representative of the Ministry of Economy participated in the program and observed the distribution of food. They had interviews with TV channels afterwards and thanked Hagar for the aid in this critical situation. They called for the continuation of such support for families and have assured Hagar of their assistance and cooperation.
A similiar food distribution event was also held by Hagar in a camp for displaced families with children recently, with approximately 3200 people receiving food as a result. Over the coming months, Hagar will continue to distribute food to destitute and vulnerable families.
