Addressing climate change

As summer has arrived in Afghanistan the issues around climate change and its effects on humans and other life are important topics to discuss. AIL produces programs on the environment which go out on TV and Radio Meraj and through social media. People need education in how to care for themselves and livestock in high heat. They also need to know how their daily life contributes to global warming and what to do to minimize their impact.
Reaching children and youth people with these messages in one of the primary goals. The younger generation are more aware of saving water, maintaining green spaces, cleaning up the environment, recycling, reducing plastic use, reducing use of coal, insulation of homes to prevent heat loss. They educate the older members of their families and neighbors which creates community level change.

AIL’s environmental work includes raising awareness among the public about issues to do with the environment and what individuals and communities can do the help. AIL produces programs which go out on TV and Radio Meraj and through social media. People need to know that almost all environmental issues have been affected by human activity and that their actions make a difference.
The environment program also reaches students in schools teaching about the changes in the environment and what they can do to help prevent its destruction. Students learn about saving water, planting trees, cleaning up, recycling, reducing plastic use, reducing use of coal, insulation to prevent heat loss. Students spread what they learn to family, friends and community. Small changes by individuals begin to improve environments.

One focus of the environment program is finding ways to keep the environment clean and reducing pollution.
Students cleaned the school yard and classrooms and learned about natural cleaning products. They raised awareness of plastic waste by not using plastic bags and taking reusable bags with you when shopping. They also talked about investing in a reusable water bottle, refusing single use plastics and making sure items are recycled and waste goes in the right place. Everyone is advised not to print items unless necessary as cutting down use of paper products is beneficial.
AIL’s Youth Club worked on getting the message out on social media about ways everyone can help the environment. It is a subject young people can talk about with friends, families and neighbors to keep awareness of this issue in people’s minds.
Students were asked to write articles about this issue for school work and to make presentations in class. Meraj Radio and TV produced ads about protecting the environment and ran these during broadcasts.
