While the world is dealing with the challenges of COVID-19, we continue our animal rescue operations. We’ve had a busy summer here on Koh Lanta and I want to share some stories of our recent rescue animals so you can understand the work we do and our challenges saving lives. This GlobalGiving Project campaign, and your contribution to it, goes directly to our mission of easing the pain and suffering of the rescue animals here on Koh Lanta and the surrounding area.
Pea is everyone's favourite diva
Pea loves attention. When she plonks herself in your lap, you don't have much option but to give her the strokes and scratches she wants. Pea loves to play and always joins in if there is a string to chase or a butterfly to try and catch. She is silly and lovely. Everyone should have a Pea in their life to keep them on their toes!
Pea came to us in last spring with very serious injuries after being hit by a car. At only 8 weeks old, she went from being fine, to left for dead.
Pea’s back leg was paralyzed from the impact of the car and she could barely move. Now, after a lot of medical care and a long time in rehab, you would never know she had been through such trauma, or have any trouble walking. She struts around like she owns the place!
Meet Eloise
This gorgeous girl was brought to LAW recently with terrible injuries that required life-saving surgery. And yes, this sort of treatment is very expensive.
Eloise had awful eye, neck and facial injuries caused by a gunshot, as well as a badly broken leg. She was transferred to a specialist clinic in Phuket, a nearby island. She had specialized surgery to pin her leg, which went well. But sadly, the facial surgery was unable to save her right eye.
Since returning to LAW in mid-July, she has made tremendous progress, but she still needs a huge amount of tender loving care and help from our volunteers as she recovers.
Eloise is now in our sponsorship program to help pay for her continued treatment and rehabilitation. We feel that once she recovers we can find her a forever home as she is a very sweet dog. However, for now, she faces a long road to a full recovery.
This is Opal
Opal is the victim of a horrific accident that will change her life forever. As a tiny, inquisitive kitten with the world at her paws, she loved to explore and get up to all kinds of mischief. Unfortunately, this led to a life changing injury.
Opal fell from the roof of a tall building, which left her fighting for her life. She will never be the same. Her injury to her frail head means she will have long lasting brain damage. Since coming to the centre she is fed by hand every meal time, has physio everyday which improves her mobility, and she receives a lot of costly medication for pain and swelling.
While this is a heartbreaking story, we do feel she’ll make a full recovery, although she may walk a bit funny, which is part of her charm.
This is Tulip
Tulip, an absolutely beautiful dog inside and out. Such a kind heart and gentle dog who is amazing with all the other animals. Sadly, Tulip is not very well...
Tulip was found lying outside a local bar that had been closed for a while. She was just skin and bones. After interviewing the locals in the area we found out that she was just left behind, abandoned by the bar owners when they closed down the business due to COVID-29. Apparently, she stayed hoping they would come back, but they never did.
When we took her in, we found out some very sad news. Tulip had heart worm and needed long term treatment in order to live. And it also means she can not fly, so she’ll never be able to find a forever home out of Thailand.
Tulip needs costly medication every month for her heart worm. Last week, after 5 months of intense treatment, she was taken to a specialist hospital. The news was not good. Her heart worm is still alive and growing, which was devastating news to hear. She will now have to undergo further tests, treatments, and medication, then another long trip to the specialist hospital is needed.
Tulip is now in our sponsorship program to help pay for her continuing treatment.
Meet Rain
Rain is our coolest customer. She likes to take it easy and keep it relaxed which is not always easy in Kitty City with 20 other cats, but she keeps away from any drama.
Her favourite thing to do is lounge around in the sun and ironically doesn't like rain very much at all! She is an independent soul but doesn't shy away from strokes and cuddles and loves a good chin and ear scratch.
Rain was sadly abandoned outside our clinic as a tiny kitten. Unfortunately, this is a common occurrence for black cats here. It was clear that she had been badly neglected and was in desperate need of life saving sustenance.
Meet Gobble
Gobble is a handsome and charming this cat that has it all. He likes to keep life very relaxed, nothing seems to phase our Gobble.
As his name suggests meal times are a favourite part of the day, and he has been known to try and sneak a few cat biscuits from someone else's dish. Gobble is very sociable with cats and humans.
Gobble was brought to the centre by a tourist who could see he was struggling to survive. He was very young, and was very malnourished. Like so many of our rescue animals, we found out that Gobble did have an owner but they decided they no longer wanted him, so abandoned him on the road.
