Help blind students by donating braille books

Project Report: 

Introduction:

We are pleased to present this project report on the successful execution of our initiative to provide braille books to visually impaired students in collaboration with Mitra Jyothi. Over the past three months, we have made significant strides in reaching out to and impacting the lives of visually impaired students, educators, and individuals in our community.

Mitra Jyothi is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of visually impaired individuals. Based in Bengaluru, India, Mitra Jyothi has been making significant strides in the field of education and rehabilitation for the visually impaired community from the past 33 years. Mitra Jyothi’s commitment to fostering independence and self-reliance among the visually impaired is commendable, and their work has positively impacted the lives of hundreds of individuals.

Project Objectives:

To provide braille books and educational resources to visually impaired students.

To support visually impaired students in their educational journey and foster inclusivity.

To raise awareness about the importance of braille literacy and inclusive education.

Project Accomplishments:

I. Reaching Out to visually impaired students:

Over the last three months, we have successfully reached out to over 500 visually impaired children, providing them with access to braille text books and educational materials. These resources have significantly contributed to their academic progress and self-confidence.

II. Supporting Educators:

In addition to students, we have also engaged with over 50 visually impaired teachers who teach sighted students. We provided them with text books in Braille to enhance their teaching methods, making the learning experience more enriching and accessible for their sighted students.

III. Empowering Individuals:

Our project has extended its reach beyond the classroom. We have connected with more than 200 visually impaired individuals, who requested for specialized books to be converted into the Braille format. This has educated them about the importance of braille literacy and the need for inclusive education.

IV. Braille Book Distribution:

We have distributed a diverse range of braille books covering various subjects and grade levels. These books are tailored to the curriculum requirements of visually impaired students, ensuring they receive a well-rounded education.

V. Establishment of Braille Libraries:

Mitra Jyothi has established a Braille library and a Digital audio library with more than 4000 books in English, Hindi, Kannada and Telegu languages. These libraries serve as invaluable resources for visually impaired students, educators and individuals offering a conducive learning environment.

VI. Assistive Technologies:

To further enhance the educational experience, we have invested in assistive technologies such as the DAISY player (Digital Accessible Information System) and other audio devices, ensuring that blind students have access to the latest tools to support their learning.

Challenges Faced:

While our project has achieved significant milestones, we did face some challenges during this period. These challenges include resource limitations and logistical issues in reaching remote areas. However, we have been proactive in addressing these challenges and finding solutions to ensure project success.

Braille Transcription Centre till date:

Mitra Jyothi currently supplies textbooks to 40+ schools in Karnataka, and 18 schools in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The Braille Transcription Centre is responsible for providing textbooks for all subjects from grade 1 to grade 12 in Kannada, English and Telegu languages.

In addition, we cater to approximately 200+ individual beneficiaries, and we produce and distribute >250 titles of Braille books annually for their benefit.

The Braille transcription centre embosses close to 7 lac braille pages a quarter.

We also publish and distribute two Braille publications for the visually impaired community.

‘Insight’ a quarterly English publication written and edited by a team of visually impaired people. It is an engaging blend of articles covering diverse topics that are of interest to the visually impaired community.

‘Jnaana Samhitha’ a monthly Kannada publication, containing articles on science and technology, culture and lifestyle, health, humour, travel, cooking recipes, short stories, inspirational stories, and much more. This is mailed out to 100+ subscribers

Future Plans:

Our commitment to supporting visually impaired students and promoting inclusive education remains steadfast. In the coming months, we plan to:

Expand our reach to reach even more visually impaired children and educators.

Continuously update and replenish the braille book inventory to cater to evolving educational needs.

Collaborate with more organizations and individuals to broaden our impact.
