Dear Supporter,
Can you believe we are in March already!? 2015 is starting to gain momentum and we plan to ride that wave to success!
In our last update, we spoke about our volunteers building 3 eco-toilets for the Santhom slum. We now have 5 that are being trailed by the community before a further 20 are to be built by future volunteers. These toilets are made from wooden boxes with a bucket underneath that is emptied into larger compost bins. A very simple system that we hope will one day replace the current communal toilet that drains directly into the river that flows through the Santhom slum.
On the construction side, we have a very exciting fundraising event coming up! The GVI India Team will be saddling up for a 300km bike ride! They have aptly named the event “Sweaty Bums for Slums” and they will be sweating it up for a good cause for 5 intense days in April. The fundraiser will see our volunteers and team members cycle through Kochi, Allepey, Cherai Beach, Tripayar and more Keralan countryside’s and villages.
The team hopes to raise enough money to buy new houses for families living in shacks in a local Kerala slum. A single house costs £3000 to build and we hope to build as many as possible from this epic cycle challenge! If you would like to donate to this cause, click here for the Global Giving donation page.
Thank you for your continued support on this project.
All the best.
