We have decided to make a change to this project and extend its reach to include all costs related to traveling to cancer treatment site: airfare, lodging, and related expenses. Cancer is treacherous, it mutates and evolves constantly, and patients have to strive to keep up the pace. Often times, it means that patients with rare or advanced tumors need to access the doctors practicing far away from home.
For example, here is a story of Maruf who lives in Uzbekistan. In 2012 he was incorrectly diagnosed and had surgery, then treated for hernia, and only in 2013 he was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer. Since then Maruf has been in a continous struggle with cancer, as it would retreat for a few months, only to come back again and again. In September 2016 Maruf had a second relapse, and by this type the tumor had become resistant to commonly available chemotherapy. Local doctors did not have any options available to Maruf outside of surgery.
With our help, he was able to travel to India to consult with more experienced specialists. He came back encouraged, as a newer, targeted therapy is available in India that can help him achieve remission again. This type of therapy is called targeted because it can identify and attack cancer cells, while doing little damage to normal cells. Maruf is looking forward to going back to India to purchase the medication soon.
Maruf has three children and is no longer able to work. His family had used up their life savings during the years of treatment. He has to rely on support of charitable organizations to help him reach necessary treatment. Thanks to your donations, he has already traveled once, and we hope to be able to support him again.
Thank you so much for staying with us!
