HELP 20 DISABLED CHILDREN IN INDIA FIGHT AUTISM (36030)

(A project by Balajothi Centre for the Disabled Trust, Bengaluru, India )

Project report due on : July 7, 2019 / Report sent on : June 7, 2019

Funding required : $ 5000.00

Funds raised to date : $ 597.60

Remaining amount to be raised : 4402.40

Dear DONOR, Balajothi and the families of disabled children with autism are grateful for your understanding of this dreaded disability which is widely prevalent all over the world.  YOU have generously donated the sum of $ 597.60 to help these children receive training and rehabilitation.  Being a lifelong spectrum disability these children require continuous and sustained training over a lengthy period, perhaps all their lives.

This is the story of a child with autism, and how he has progressed to make himself an endearing star of the institution he is part of.

Rohan (name changed) was born a physically healthy child, but with surgical help.  He was birth asphyxiated for close to eight minutes, resulting in irrevocable brain damage.  He was later diagnosed with autism, in addition to other mental retardation, cerebral palsy and multiple disabilities, and medically certified 100% disabled for life.  He was admitted into a special needs school where he now continues to be looked after.

Rohan became a part of Balajothi at the age of two.  Meeting his challenges was taken up on a war footing resulting in commendable progress.  He is now able to walk with support, indicates his toileting needs, allows to be fed and responds when spoken to.  Being autistic his liking for music was nurtured and he is now able to play his own ‘music’ on an electronic keyboard.  His talent for numbers (another key characteristic of autism) enables him to unerringly point out answers on a numerical chart. Rohan is now called ‘Tara zameen par’ meaning ‘Star on earth’ and considered a medical miracle by the very same medical fraternity who termed him a ‘vegetable’ several years ago !!
