Early this year, we gave you a sneak preview of the publication in the making, Ulu Papar Tales, and shared the short story of Kadui and Sidui. In its final proof stage, we were hesitant to reveal too much three months ago. Now, we are proud to announce that the final version is ready! Read about Gayatas, a fearsome female leader who made marks on a stone to keep count of the number of heads she beheaded (see photo below), and other tales of strength, conflict and peacemaking on Dusun territory.
Ulu Papar Tales features 9 oral histories, now available in both hardcopy and online.
Background of Ulu Papar Tales
Revealed by elders from Ulu Papar, the stories captured in Ulu Papar Tales demonstrate their people’s long and continuous presence in the area and contribute to a valuable base of knowledge on Ulu Papar. Community researchers interviewed village elders, using their skills in participatory video (a community filmmaking approach) to document tales of origin, war, heroism and much more, transforming Ulu Papar oral histories into the written word. The contents of this booklet are a direct result of Ulu Papar communities in action.

We would like to once again thank you, our GlobalGiving donors, for your generous support over many years. Your donations have backed efforts by Indigenous Dusun communities to learn more about their biocultural heritage and share this knowledge among their own as well as with others. This includes supporting community researchers' efforts in carrying out interviews and creating illustrations that appear in Ulu Papar Tales.
