Thank you for your continued support of our community programmes. Your commitment is helping to create meaningful change beyond conservation, supporting families, strengthening livelihoods, and investing in the next generation.

Growing Together: Updates from our Community Projects

1. Abundant Harvests and Fresh Food for Families Our community agricultural teams (supported by the Investec YES Program) have transformed local food security. The Lomshiyo team's agricultural production has been staggering: in January, they harvested and sold 600 bags of butternut. The momentum continued into February with a harvest of 224 crates of green peppers and an additional 363 bags of butternut. We proudly used a portion of this fresh produce for an outreach initiative at Sheba Primary School, donating the vegetables directly to local families to promote healthy eating habits.

2. Bridging the Digital Divide: The Open Learning Programme We believe that investing in education is the key to long-term conservation. In February, we expanded our Open Learning Programme to Grade 3 and 4 students across Fairview, Louisville, Sinqobile, and Sheba Primary Schools. Using digital tablets and interactive activities like games and singing, our facilitators are teaching foundational English and Maths skills. The initiative aims to foster curiosity, independent thinking, and enthusiasm for learning among the youth.

3. Economic Empowerment: Mobilizing a Livestock Auction Conservation works best when it economically empowers the people living alongside the reserve. In March, we partnered with Meat Naturally Africa to mobilize the community for a large livestock auction. This initiative created a direct economic channel for local farmers to sell their cattle. Furthermore, our team provided vital administrative and legal advocacy, even attending court to support herders, to help them secure access permits for grazing and maintain compliance with national agricultural standards.

4. Emergency Care and Community Safety Our commitment to our neighbors extends far beyond the reserve's borders. In January, Care for Wild acted as a central communication hub for community safety, issuing early warnings about dangerous rising river levels during the heavy rains, as well as alerts regarding a confirmed leopard sighting. We also provided emergency veterinary assistance in the Sheba community, successfully diagnosing and treating a cow suffering from metabolic distress, and using the moment to educate local farmers on seasonal herd health.

5. Conservation Through Sport: Revitalizing Matsulu Soccer To foster community pride and build relationships with local youth, we held a strategic meeting in March to revitalize the local community soccer tournament in Matsulu. By connecting through the universal language of sport, we are creating a positive community setting to foster independent thinking and curiosity among young participants.
