The Dry Forest Project continues to work towards achieving its goal of collaborating with local communities to restore, conserve, and sustainably manage dry forest landscapes. Since 2019, we have succeeded in reforesting nearly 9 hectares with 971 native seedlings!
In February, the project formalized two agreements to protect one hectare of degraded dry forest areas in La Yuca forest and a private area surrounding agricultural land in Santonte. These areas were reforested with the help of community members. A total of 190 seedlings were planted.
Community members participated in the monitoring of previously reforested areas in Santonte, Jatanca, Pablo Nuevo and Santa Maria and an irrigation alternative, called the Tree T-PEE, was implemented. Muchick and CAU Tecapa Conservation Groups were supported in their monthly meetings, a natural regeneration activity to the Canoncillo forest and some Dry Forest Patrols were also carried out.
Furthermore, local community members were trained on the importance of the dry forest, the indiscriminate use of pesticides and how to make biol, a natural fertilizer. The project also held an environmental education talk with children in Santonte about the conservation and protection of the endemic and endangered lizard, the ‘cañan’ (Dicrodon guttulatum).
As the world is staggering to come to terms with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have definitely not escaped its grip in Perú. On March 16, the Peruvian government declared a State of Emergency, enforcing a nationwide quarantine and introduced strict measures such as border closures, including the suspension of national and international travel. The Peruvian population has been in strict isolation in their homes and life as we know it has come to a halt.
Due to the State of Emergency, the Dry Forest Project field activities, meetings and workshops in La Libertad have been suspended. As we adapt to these unprecedented circumstances, we continue to serve our communities as best we can with a small team working from home, carrying out administrative and operational activities, including planning, fundraising and communications. A Rocha Peru has needed to conduct a full review and reprioritize activities planning in hope to resume the project at the start of July 2020.
A Rocha Peru would like to thank all those who have supported us with their donations during the GlobalGiving Climate Action Campaign. Every donation helps us to continue our Dry Forest project in Pacasmayo. Thank you all for your incredible support. In times like this, we’re reminded of how interconnected we all are. Thank you for being part of our community. Without you, none of it is possible.
Stay safe and well.
