Women Rise, We All Rise!

By Julia Matthew | Managing Director

Dear Friend,

"Women are not to be limited, they are to be limitless."

Women Empowerment today, has become the most discussed topic around the world. In basic terms, it means to diminish the gender gap and provide equal opportunities and rights to men and women.

Women empowerment refers to the empowerment of women to take all decisions of their choice. So that she can make all of the decisions for her social and economic development. Empowerment of women will surely encourage all of the women to stand for their education and the life of their own choice.

Benefits of Women Empowerment

There are several benefits of women empowerment including that on society and as well as on the country. Some of the benefits of women empowerment are listed as under:

  • Women can live their lives with dignity and self-respect.
  • The self-confidence of women is increased and they make progress contributing to the growth of the nation.
  • The social status of women is increased and they are better recognized and appreciated.
  • They can make financial decisions on their own and become financially independent.
  • Women's empowerment paves the way for an equal society where no gender discrimination exists.
  • Women empowerment brings better health facilities for the women which in turn improves the overall health status of the country.
  • An earning woman adds to the family’s income and hence elevates its living standard and social status.
  • A well-educated woman ensures that her children are educated as well, making way for a prosperous nation.

At El Shaddai, we believe that when we invest in girl’s education, societies empower future generations and foster sustainable development. Through our Homes, shelters and community centres, we empower girls and women to get proper education and learn vocational training skills like tailoring, sewing, mehendi, crochet and computer skills.

We have around 250 girls and women who attend these vocational trainings in our community centres. These women come from poor backgrounds, where there is no proper shelter, and no food, and often they have to face harassment from family members. Many of them want to study further, learn a skill, or take up a job but have no means of doing so. At El Shaddai, we make all such things possible.

We have a Success story of a lady from our shelter

Sudeepa (Name changed) is staying in a small house in the Chimbel slum area. This family is originally from Karnataka.  For the Last 18 years, she has been living with her family in Goa. Her husband is working as a labourer. She found difficulties in surviving her family. Through our fieldwork, she came to know that our centre is empowering women. So she came to our centre to learn the vocational Mehendi class. She did a 3-month Mehendi course in our centre. In this class, she learnt different types of Mehendi patterns. Now she has become a perfect Mehendi artist. And now she is taking orders to apply Mehendi for all occasions like weddings and all other festivals. She applies Mehendi for brides and other members of the family. People like her Mehendi patterns, and designs and give good feedback about her work.  Now she is standing on her own feet. She is helping her family through finances. And she is taking care of educating her children. She is very happy that our centre has allowed her to learn Mehendi and develop self-confidence in her. And now she is a successful Mehendi artist known by many people.

Many such girls and women just want a helping hand and improve their lives.  It is through the unwavering support and commitment of sponsors like you that we can continue to uplift and empower women in our community.

El Shaddai encourages Women to seek and celebrate their individuality by giving them a safe space, encouragement, structure and support to embrace their journey of self-discovery and self-love. Empowerment of women would result in a better-developed society. When women contribute equally with men, the world will surely be a better place to live.

Together, we are creating a ripple effect of positive change that extends far beyond the individuals we directly reach. Let us celebrate the achievements of empowered women and work together to build a future where gender equality is not just a dream but a reality.

With gratitude,

El Shaddai Family!
