Thank you!
We would like to thank all people making donations via GlobalGiving to Free a Girl! It makes a big difference to the lives of children worldwide at risk for sexual exploitation and human trafficking. Thank you, Thank you!
In Nepal, in the last 9 months, we have rescued 361 children from sexual exploitation! This involves the rescue of children who are sexually exploited or who find themselves in a situation with indications of human trafficking, specifically targeted at sexual exploitation. It concerns children under the age of 18. The primary goal of a rescue operation is to ensure that the child is immediately safe and receives the necessary protection and care.
Given the high levels of impunity and lack of access to justice, we are also happy to report that 21 perpetrators were arrested for this horrible crime.
The story of Alina
The name is changed to protect her privacy
Alina, a 16-year-old girl, faced a challenging upbringing in a financially struggling family in Nepal, where her parents could not hold a job. The family environment was marked by alcohol consumption, domestic violence by her father, and constant quarrels. A year before her rescue, Alina and her mother fled to another district, seeking employment in a canteen. There, Alina began working with her mother, washing dishes and later caring for a 9-month-old baby.
The turning point came when Alina met Sapana, a friend who promised her a lucrative job in a fancy shop, assuring financial support for her and her mother. Trusting Sapana, Alina left her current job and moved to the city. However, Sapana betrayed her, forcing Alina into a life of sexual exploitation in restaurants and bars.
Forced into exploitative situations with different clients every day, Alina's earnings were taken by Sapana, who provided basic necessities in return. This exploitation deprived Alina of a normal childhood, subjecting her to a traumatic and exploitative environment.
On September 6, 2023, Alina and seven other girls were rescued after an informant alerted Free a Girl's partner. The local police, in collaboration with our partner, conducted a successful rescue operation. Alina received immediate support, including medical checkups and counseling, at the partner's rehabilitation home. The following day, her family, though hesitant due to societal stigma, received counseling from legal officers and family therapy as well.
Alina is receiving comprehensive aftercare services and has enrolled in school. Her story serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to address the issue of trafficking and to provide support and awareness to girls and their families facing these risks!
