In January we were lucky enough to be gifted a venue for Tuesday nights to start serving evening meals and dinners.
Not only has this meant we can let more volunteers have the opportunitiy to cook with us but also we have infiltrated a new area with our band of free food and community engegment.
To be honest, its been harder than we could very have thought. As everyone lives in blocks of flats, very secure, we have actually been unable to reach them. Its been a mixture of catching people as they go in and out of their buildings and trying to engage them in positive conversation, then inviting them to neet thir neighbours.
One good thing did happen and I'll tell you the story now:
After cooking and serving a 4 course meal for the community, on a Tuesday night, I was taken aside by one of our guests, Ben's' sister. She asked me to explain the project's mechanics. I told her that we used waste food and volunteers to bring the community closer. She told me that Ben had mental health difficulties and didn't leave the house or talk to anyone, but he had been really pleased to be able to come to our kitchen and she was happy as he was getting out of the house. She said it had made the world of difference to him. I had spoken to Ben a few times and he only responded with brief words, but he always arrived 2 hrs early and would wait an hour until he food was ready, watching us and drinking tea we offer or reading the paper.
So thank you for your continued support helping us to provide a point of personal contact for very lonely people like Ben and together we can feed many more people this year!
We're trying to raise another £100 in the next month for some equipment we need, so if you or your freinds would make a donation, we'd be grateful!
