Over the winter months we carried out a lifestyle survey to really find out what is happeing in the lives of people that come and eat at our canteens.
It was a long process and many people were just pleased that someone was giving them their total attention for an hour. The results were very sad however.
72% of the recepients had gone at least a day without eating becasue they had no food or the rescoursces to get food and this is Far Too Many!
86% had a physical or mental disability and they were not in touch with any other people during the week or involved in other community activities. Many of the people who came were having problems with meeting the bills, housing issues or worried they were to be evicted. A lot of these elderly people were estranged from their families as well and so have no scourse of back up support.
They said our project had helped them to feel connected and more supported by the community. They are able to make networks and know they can go to one place to get advice and in some cases solve immediately issues that were contributing to their mental ill health. Local people said they returned for these reasons weekly, knowing that there is a safe place they can go to and eat in the warmth.
But we can only so this once a week for the people from these communities and we need to do more.
Please continue to support us!
