Distribution of Food and Non-Food Items and the provision of psychosocial support to flood victims
Objective of Activity:
To provide emergency support to 225 household and an estimated number of 806 affected people and their families in the form of food and non-food items.
Background
Several communities on the outskirts of and within Freetown were severely impacted. Worst affected were the communities in the direct path of the mudslide that originated at Mount Sugar Loaf in Regent and Kaningo. The complexity of the disaster left every institution and service providers confused as to how they could respond swiftly. AID Sierra Leone a registered non-governmental organization in its emergency plan mobilized its staffs and volunteers as to how they could respond to the needs of affected women, children and young people.
The mudslide and flooding in August worsened the status of youth in various ways. Youth could not fully access gainful employment or run businesses, a factor that put especially young women and girls at greater risk of sexual exploitation in order to secure income to meet their essential needs.
A team of AID Sierra Leone staff conducted rapid assessment in order to figure-out what can be done to address the immediate needs of the affected people. Key amongst the findings from the assessment revealed that the affected families requires food and non-food items and more importantly psychosocial support that would enhance their coping mechanism and resilient.
