Project Report | Dec 19, 2022
Little Gustukas

By Egle Pasnik | Project Leader

Currently, the Mother's Union Foundation is taking care of four children suffering from a rare oncological disease - a malignant tumor of the eye, whose successful treatment and trips to children's clinics in Lausanne, Switzerland, depend only on people's compassion and kindness.

Gustas is the youngest of the children under the care of the foundation. Ugne, the mother of a boy who is not yet two years old, carefully calculates each of their flights and visits to Swiss doctors, consistently and sincerely describes and shares the experience of the treatment journey.
I believe that after Gustuk's recovery, the treatment travelogues will perhaps turn into a book with priceless experience - a gift and hope for those who will travel the path of illness that day.
Wishing little Gust strength, and his parents great patience and hope, I am sharing the letter from mother Ugne's last trip:
"I am writing after a longer period of time, because the circumstances of life were such that we just returned from Gusto's 18th eye treatment visit, and 10 days later, we had to fly back again for the 19th treatment visit. As they say, our whole life is just a journey , and this month, short stops at the hospital of the visiting country were more frequent than usual, because a new focus of a tumor mass appeared in the left eye, which, due to the latter's measurements and localization, required urgent treatment procedures and their repetition.
At the moment, the calmness of the tumor foci has been recorded in the right eye for some time, while in the left eye the foci of the old tumor mass keep reviving and new ones are forming, but it is hoped that the last ones (after the applied extremely intensive cryotherapy procedures) will be controlled.
Gusto's road to recovery is like Swiss mountain paths and tracks with lots of rocks, but no matter what, all roads lead up, forward and towards the sun. I believe that the time will come when we will be successful in achieving a pause in the remission of the disease.
Our 18th visit was accompanied by a number of problems (father, who was accompanying us on the trip, suffered a leg injury a few days before the flight, so we had to quickly change tickets, look for someone who could go in his place; on the night of departure, the car with which we were supposed to drive to Vilnius airport broke down ; the zippers of the suitcases broke; the available bank cards did not work, Gust got sick right before the flight, but luckily it did not interfere with the medical procedures, etc.) it seemed that everything was not going as it should.
But life has taught us to smile at sadness, difficulties, and pain. After all, there will always be one or another worries, various obstacles or a series of problems in life. And it all depends on our own attitude, how we will react to it. All difficulties/events make us stronger, reveal the depth of our peace, inner strength.
We would like those difficulties to be as few as possible, but we patiently collect our experiences, collect them and become stronger. Even though we don't have the sky in our eyes right now, the sparkles of happiness aren't dancing, but that doesn't stop us from smiling, laughing, reaching for and trying new Gusto childhood experiences.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for holding Gusto's and our hands and hearts when the lights go out in the soul.
