This project funds intensive physical therapy and support for Nigerian children under 15 with Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP). While Nigeria is polio-free, non-polio causes like Guillain-Barre syndrome and injection-related injuries cause long-term, debilitating paralysis. We provide weekly physiotherapy, custom mobility aids (braces, wheelchairs), and family counseling to prevent permanent disability, restore function, and enable school attendance.
Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) causes sudden, severe weakness, often leading to permanent disability in children. Causes like Guillain-Barre syndrome and nerve damage from improper injections are common. Impoverished families cannot afford the long-term, intensive physiotherapy and specialized assistive devices needed for recovery. Without intervention, these children face a lifetime of immobility, social exclusion, and economic dependence.
We solve this by bringing specialist physiotherapy and resources to affected children. 1. Therapy: We fund a minimum of six months of free, intensive, weekly physical therapy to restore muscle function and prevent painful contractures. 2. Mobility: We custom-fit and provide essential mobility aids like wheelchairs, braces, and crutches to ensure access to education. 3. Empowerment: We train parents in home-care and provide support groups to ensure consistent, life-changing rehabilitation.
Therapy is transformative: it turns a life of dependence into one of potential independence. Improved mobility allows the child to attend school, learn vocational skills, and become a productive, contributing member of society, breaking the cycle of poverty and disability. For the family, the reduced burden of full-time care frees up parents to earn income. This project creates a healthier, more inclusive future where disability does not define destiny.
