What a busy spring it has been on Luzon and Leyte islands! The midwives of Mercy In Action in the Philippines have been immersed in all aspects of patient care day and night as this global pandemic grinds on. Our statistics show that more pregnant women than usual are coming to the birth centers to deliver, as hospitals are now full of sick patients. We also are using our ambulance more for routine transportation, as we are called upon to pick up women in labor to bring them to the birth center since public transportation has become less accessible and more expensive during the COVID pandemic.
Another vital service we have continued providing since early in the pandemic is giving food to all the pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers in our care. Whether they come to the clinic for a prenatal check-up, or for labor and delivery, or for a postpartum and newborn check-up, they leave with a bag of food. These are hard times for many in the Philippines, especially the low-income families who use our midwifery services. As experts in maternal/child health, we know that nothing can make up for a lack of good nutrition in the womb and early childhood, so we are happy to add a feeding program to our services during this time of COVID.
