More Than Just Books: A Day at YUM Community Library

Reading and play are part of our daily routine at the YUM Community Library in Bukit Batu, Central Kalimantan. Upon arrival, children are required to read a book for at least 15 minutes before joining other activities. After reading, they report to Ms. Rusti, our librarian, who asks questions based on the book they read. The questions vary depending on their grade level, such as: Who is your favorite character? What did you learn from the story?

Most children choose short stories, fairy tales, folk tales, or comics. Our regular readers are mainly elementary school students. Younger children, especially those in kindergarten, often come to play rather than read, though they enjoy browsing books and pictures. Teenagers and parents who accompany their children are also welcome to read and enjoy the library's collection.

After reading, children are free to choose other activities or play in the toys corner. They may play individually or in groups, as long as they respect others. Activities happen both inside and outside the library; some play in the hallways, while others enjoy football or badminton in the front yard. These playtimes are valuable moments for learning social skills, sharing, and resolving conflicts. When issues arise, Ms. Rusti gently guides the children to understand the importance of cooperation and empathy.

Voices from Our Young Members

“I’ve known YUM since I was little because I live nearby. I love all the activities, especially coloring, drinking milk, and watching movies. My favorite book is the Doraemon comic, Nobita always gets his wishes granted! It’s funny and exciting. I come to the library almost every day.” FA, Grade 3

“I became active at the library in 2023 when I joined the English Club. I also enjoy movies and art & craft. My favorite comics are Slam Dunk. Because they’re about basketball. I really want to play basketball, it looks fun and challenging!”AA, Grade 4

Thanks to your continued support, we’ve been able to provide new books, toys, creative materials, and essential tools for the library. Your generosity also enables us to employ a dedicated librarian who leads and inspires all the enriching activities at the YUM Community Library.
