Learning English at the Library

Guessing word games

In the first three months of 2026, our English Club members have learned many new things. The younger group, consisting of children from Grades 1 to 3, learned about the five senses. Our tutor introduced the names of the senses in English and pointed out their locations on the body. The children then memorized them before each took turns standing in front of the class to present. On other days, they practiced guessing words in English in pairs using pictures.

One of the students, IL, a third grader, demonstrated her learning during her turn. She not only named the five senses in English but also explained the function of each: “I can see with my eyes, I can hear with my ears, I can taste with my tongue, I can touch with my hands, and I can smell with my nose.”

During the same period, the older group, consisting of children from Grades 4 to 6, learned how to use a dictionary. Fortunately, our library has a good collection of English–Indonesian dictionaries that are accessible to all English Club members. They also learned about prepositions, likes and dislikes, and began translating short stories.

The parents are very supportive of their children learning English. Around 30% of the English Club members live far from the library, and Bukit Batu has no public transportation. However, on English learning days, parents make the effort to drive them to the library and either wait until the session finishes or return later to pick them up. To support coordination, all parents are part of the YUM English Club WhatsApp group, which is managed by our librarian.

Your generous support has made these meaningful learning experiences possible for our children. Through your donations, we are able to provide engaging learning materials and create a supportive environment where children can grow in confidence and develop their English skills. We sincerely thank you for your continued trust and partnership.
