By Iva Urbanek | Campaign coach, Djurens Ratt summer tour
Djurens Rätt summer tour 2018 will raise the question about fur farming and create a strong public opinion that aims to reach and influence the Swedish government.
In recent years many countries in Europe have banned fur farming. These decisions have either been due to concerns on animal welfare and ethics or are caused by adopting stricter regulations that cause fur farms to close down. In Sweden, Djurens Rätt has been working against fur farming for many years. Our hard work has led to changes - the keeping of foxes was discontinued in 2001 and chinchilla farming was also discontinued in 2014. But Sweden has still not reached as far as other countries, there are still mink farms in Sweden and around 1 million minks are killed each year for their fur only.
It is high time for Sweden to join the European countries that have banned fur farming. Our goal is to be part of a ban on mink farming and finally reach the end of this important issue.
To succeed with our big plans we have prepared and invested in our campaign against fur farming, called Pälslöftet (Fur Free Pledge). People who visit us on the summer tour will be able to take a Fur Free Pledge. We have also printed new materials that will be handed over and inform thousands of people throughout Sweden. We will visit around 80 events this summer and along with us we have about 100 volunteers. The summer tour is a huge non-profit project that engages many people who work for animal rights in their free time.
The second weekend in May we are arranging a volunteer training event called “The summer tour kick off”. The people joining our kick off are there to learn more about outreach work and will be animal rights and summer tour experts after the weekend is over. They are an important part of the project - together with them we will work hard this summer to reach changes for the minks in Sweden.
Do you also want to see an end to fur farming? Do you want to support our work? Please make a difference along with us and donate money for our Summer Tour. Thank you!
