Protecting Rhinos, People, and Biodiversity
Thank you for supporting the dedicated rangers who safeguard rhinos, wildlife, and the rich biodiversity of this region. As we closed out 2024, we celebrated an incredible milestone: 3,800 days without incursions. This achievement is a testament to the unwavering commitment of our rangers, who work tirelessly to protect these vital ecosystems.
Rangers: Guardians and Stewards
Our rangers are much more than protectors; they are carers, observers, and stewards with unique roles and distinct personalities that reflect their duties.
Rhino Monitors:
These rangers are with the rhinos 24/7, 365 days a year, clocking an astounding 91,200 hours of continuous care. They develop deep bonds of trust with the rhinos, enabling them to detect the smallest signs of illness or injury and treat minor wounds without immobilization. With 21 calves born to rehabilitated and released orphans, this bond is particularly important. Beyond protection, they monitor behaviors like territorial displays, births of calves and social nteractions, as well as report wildlife activity across the area.
K9 Unit: Evolving Excellence
Our K9 Unit saw exciting changes with the retirement of two exceptional dogs, Alpha and Reaper, and the addition of Becca to the team. With four operational K9s trained in tracking, detection, and apprehension, this unit remains a formidable force, serving in roles like access control, fence patrols, rapid response, and even wildlife tracking.
Mounted Unit: Expanding Reach
The Mounted Unit grew from 12 to 22 horses, allowing us to expand operations beyond Care for Wild into surrounding areas. Known for their ability to quickly navigate rugged terrain, they are a favorite in local communities, often drawing smiles from children during patrols.
Technology and Operations Room
The year also brought advancements in technology, including additional cameras, new monitoring tablets, and the expansion of our Operations Room systems. Operating 24/7, the Operations Room serves as the hub for all monitoring and deployment activities, ensuring seamless communication and swift response capabilities.
Your Impact
These developments would not have been possible without your incredible generosity. Your support plays a critical role in safeguarding rhinos, protecting local communities, and preserving wild spaces for generations to come.
From all of us at Care for Wild, thank you for making this vital work possible. Together, we are building a safer future for rhinos and the ecosystems they call home.
