The Clinic is Savely Accessible Again!

The Clinic is Savely Accessible Again!

We are so very grateful that the entrance to the clinic is safe and accessible again. A year ago things looked very different. The government had widened the road in front of our clinic. This resulted in major challenges. Patients could barely reach the entrance, fences and walls were demolished, and all the parking spaces were lost. After months of hard work, everything has been revamped. The new entrance is so much improved that it is  better than it’s ever been before! We now have a new entrance gate with guard house, on-site parking, fully restored security fencing and a beautiful wheelchair-friendly entrance. People from all around can once again safely visit the clinic. Our heartfelt go to everyone who has helped make this possible!

You may remember our appeal for help last Easter. The government had widened the public road in front of our clinic. And that had major consequences. They put a compulsory purchase order on a long strip of land, two meters wide, in front of the clinic and up to and beyond the boundary wall of the main entrance gates of the campus. During this requisition they caused severe damage to the outside walls of the clinic and ruined existing entrance making it unsafe and unusable. Patients and visitors could no longer enter the clinic safely nor park their car. Patient numbers dropped. We are very grateful for all the donations we have received. As soon as the required amount was raised work started immediately to repair the façade of the clinic. A new entrance gate and perimeter walls and fences were built. The new paving is on one level making it ideal for mothers with pushchairs, wheelchair users, stretchers and for people who are less mobile, sick and in pain.

Car Parking.

Because all the on-road parking spaces in front of the clinic were lost due to the road works, we have made a large secure level carpark within our campus. We are really proud of this; visitors and patients can now park and enter the clinic safely and we have enough space to have a tent for extra events and special clinics.

New Innovation: first ever Screening Day for students at the start of the new school year.

Now the renovation works at the clinic are nearing completion the management and staff can once again turn their attention to improving clinical practice. One of their initiatives is a screening programme for all boarding students returning after the long holidays at the start of the new school year.

The screening of the reporting students was well prepared for by the clinic management.

Purpose for the screening:

    1. For the parents to interact with the health workers concerning their children's health

    2. To determine if and how children with chronic illness can be better supported by the clinic staff

    3. To determine the health status of the students after they had been home for over two months

    4. To determine which drugs need to be in stock the most at the beginning of the term.

A tent was erected in the new car park. The extra staff were two clinical officers and two lab assistants Four extra medical staff, 2 doctors and 2 laboratory technicians, were hired for the day so that it did not interfere with the daily activities of the clinic and thus preventing any possible delays for the regular patients and the parents attending with their child.

250 students took part in the screening programme.

28 of the students had stomach ulcers and 7 had malaria, 20 had flu or respiratory problems, coughs and colds.

The turn up was lower than expected but the parents who came were grateful for the attention given to their child and left in the knowledge that their child’s health is being well catered for and prioritised and that they can rest assured that the clinic will look after them if needed. The parents were also able to see the vast improvements made to the clinic and meet the staff.

We hope that the turn up and interest will increase each year.
