Oxygen
In the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary, oxygen is defined as a chemical element that is a gas with no smell or colour. It is a vital component of air and water, essential for the survival of humans, animals, and plants. Oxygen is also crucial for combustion.
In the West we generally take oxygen for granted. The project leader and another Dutch volunteer, both support workers for the clinic, are trained adult and children’s nurses with many years of experience working in hospitals in The Netherlands and in the UK. They had never heard of an oxygen concentrator up until a few weeks ago when Esther, the JMC clinical officer, asked for one! They realised how privileged people are in Western countries where oxygen and other medical gasses are piped in the wall or in cylinders and so easily accessible. In Africa, less affluent countries and in rural areas oxygen supplies are not so on hand. This is where an oxygen concentrator provides vital supplies of life-giving air, oxygen! Currently there are 2 oxygen cylinders in the clinic, both very heavy with fragile flow regulators that can be easily broken should the cylinder fall over. See pictures below. We are very grateful that we have received a donation from well wishers* to enable us to purchase a Portable Oxygen concentrator for the clinic so that we can provide oxygen easily and safely to patients and more importantly that there will always have a supply of oxygen available in the clinic 24/7 and not have to worry that the oxygen cylinders need refilling, which is a very time consuming and expensive task. In the next report there will be pictures of it in use.
From Wikipedia: An oxygen concentrator is a device that concentrates the oxygen from a gas supply (typically ambient air) by selectively removing nitrogen to supply an oxygen-enriched product gas stream. They are used industrially, to provide supplemental oxygen at high altitudes, and as medical devices for oxygen therapy.
Oxygen concentrators are used widely for oxygen provision in healthcare applications, especially where liquid or pressurized oxygen is too dangerous or inconvenient, such as in homes or portable clinics.
