Grasslands are a critical part of the life sustaining ecosystem services that we as humans depend on for our quality of life. Yet it enjoys so little time in the spotlight. On the Jabulani reserve that our elephant herd calls home, we encountered a large-scale problem that required immediate attention.
Through agricultural activities of the past the soil has been left barren and unpopulated by valuable grasses. We have set out in past phases to right this wrong towards mother nature. This has been a grueling and labor-intensive task. Through the help of our loving supportive global community, we have continued with this mammoth task of restoring these grasslands over the course of the next few years.
Since the time of our last update, we have completed approximately another 50 m² of restoration. Relentlessly ripping the crusted soil, scattering our own home brewed elephant dung compost, and densely packing the affected area with thick stands of harvested thorn branches. This 50m² of additionally treated area can now accommodate the growth of grasses, protecting the soil against the impact of rain drops. The densely packed branches in turn protects the grass from being grazed upon. Over the next 5 years these areas will continue to restore itself thanks to head start given by the ripping, composting, and packing process.
And little by little we will restore the elephant habitat to its once former self. None of this could have been achieved if not for our loyal supporters who empower us to drive change on the grounds. To all our supporters, a heartly thank you, you are the real habitat restoration warriors.
Warm Regards
